In 1945 Jean Dubuffet coined the term Art Brut to describe works by people “unscathed by artistic culture”: psychiatric patients, mediums, loners and self-taught makers who create outside any circuit, with neither audience nor model.
Madge Gill draws at the dictation of a spirit guide, Carlo Zinelli fills his sheets with repeated silhouettes, Luboš Plný maps the human body with an anatomist’s precision, and Michel Nedjar shapes dolls from rags and earth.
The gallery shows these works as one shows art, full stop: for their power, not for the biographies of their makers. The page is a sheet of card: draw on it.
