Christine Sefolosha, Nocturnal Odyssey

CHRISTINE SEFOLOSHA : Odyssée nocturne

From 22 October to 27 November 2021
Galerie Les Yeux Fertiles, 27 rue de Seine, Paris 6e

Ghost ships and wandering, wrecked and sunken vessels have haunted our imagination, and literature and its myths, since the Odyssey and Noah’s Ark. For the ocean is an immense and threatening element, a world both familiar and dangerous. In it the sublime and the horrible become emblems, along with human finitude and our ability to overcome what exceeds us, to stare down the impossible. The sea beds are strewn with wrecks that are in themselves treasures for our dreams. This underwater world fascinates us with its alluring inhospitality, its radical otherness.
The universe of Christine Sefolosha’s works has this uncanny familiarity, this nocturnal atmosphere in which forms seem to dissolve before our eyes while we are gripped by their epic beauty. This blurred world engenders monsters that are our own. In these drawings, these monotypes, these wild inks, there is no dawn to put them to flight. Christine Sefolosha’s art does not protect us from our anxieties; it depicts them for us in its unsettling metaphors, its gossamer allegories, which show no mercy to the beholder of their enchantments, by turns burlesque and dark.
